Take a few days to enjoy the magnificent Great Ocean Road
Victoria’s Great Ocean Road has a status for being one of the world’s most magnificent roads. So that you can really appreciate it, you need to take it slowly. Yes, you could probably do it in a day: it is only 150 miles long. It would be a shame to rush it, though. Instead, plan on breaking your journey up into several overnight stays. By doing this, you will have time to really soak it all in. It is easy to locate Great Ocean Road accommodation. The road was created for travelers and your arrival is expected.
Even though Lorne is only a short hop from Torquay, it is a good choice for your first stop on the Great Ocean Road. For over a hundred years, Lorne has been called one of Australia’s most beautiful towns. People who stay there often comment that it reminds them of a Mediterranean coastal town, combined with an Australian feeling. You will know what they mean while you enjoy a cappuccino at a trendy sidewalk cafe and watch everyone enjoying a day in the sun at the beach fronting Loutit Bay.
Apollo Bay will be another great place to spend a day and a night as you make your way up the coast along the Great ocean Road. Apollo Bay is just along edge of Cape Otway. If you are a surfer, you will already know that there are some great waves to be ridden in the Apollo Bay area. If the water is calm, you can take a sea kayak tour and pay a visit to the seals that call the Apollo Bay coastline home. If you are a horse lover, then go riding across the hardpacked sand at the beach at low tide. Obviously, another option is to just sit back and unwind. Do a little window shopping and maybe find an antique you just can’t live without and then have an excellent meal in one of the several restaurants or cafes in town.
Take it slow as you drive through Great Otway National Park. You won’t want to miss a thing in this beautiful wonderland. You will find stands of trees in the park which are hundreds of years old and are the offspring of a species that has been present since prehistoric times. When you pass roadsigns that tell you to watch out for koalas, kangaroos and other native animals, they are not joking. Cape Otway is their home and they love it there. While you’re there, take a side trip right out to the tip of the cape and see one of the oldest lighthouses in Australia.
Your next stop would be the fabulous 12 Apostles in Port Campbell National Parks. These spectacular rock stacks are among the most photographed rocks in the world. Seeing them in person from the edge of a vertical cliff is an experience you will never forget. It is worth walking there along the Great Ocean Walk from Apollo Bay if you do not mind walking for 64 miles (104 km). If that sounds too strenuous for you, consider seeing it from a helicopter when you stay for the night in Port Campbell.
These are just a few of the Great Ocean Road attractions. It can honestly be said that the whole road is one highlight after the other. Take your time and find out why this road is considered one of the world’s most spectacular.
